Best iPhone Apps for Fitness

By Bill B Phillips

With good health more of a concern than ever and Australia officially the fattest country in the world (gasp!) it’s time we all did something about getting fit and improving our overall health. While computers and mobile phones have long been touted as the reason all of us are getting so unfit, the advent of iPhone fitness applications means that they may soon become our saviours! Whether you’re a computer repairs technician or someone with only the most rudimentary knowledge of how smart-phones work, there’s sure to be an app that can help you with your health goals–it’s just a matter of finding one! So dust off the jogging shoes, get out your iPhone and let’s have a look at the top 4 apps for fitness!

RunMate

If, like many other Australians, you’ve always wanted to improve on your running, or you want to run for fitness but are a little intimidated as to where to start, this application is for you. With tailored interval training and a progress tracker, this app guides you step-by-step (no pun intended) into running your first 5 kilometres!

iPump Pilates

Pilates is one of the best ways to tone and shape lean, beautiful bodies, and this handy application is just as good as having a personal instructor in the room with you! With detailed pictures of how to perform exercises and the ability to customise pilates workouts based on the areas you want to work on this application will have you shapely, flexible and looking good for Summer!

iFitness

This app allows you to not only track your fitness but to improve on things like calorie-burning, weight-lifting techniques, progress-monitoring and loads of other areas of your workout. With iFitness you can really customise your fitness schedule so that it stays fresh and you stay motivated!

iYoga

If a more relaxed workout is your style then iYoga is the perfect app with which to blend calming stretches with health-improving muscle sculpting. iYoga has detailed pictures, calming music and a beginner’s, intermediate and advanced level so that as your skill improves, so does the difficulty of your moves. A must for all yoga enthusiasts and people interested in giving it a go!

The best thing about iPhone applications is that unlike a lot of computer programs that help with fitness, you don’t encounter problems and complexities that have you calling the computer support service every 5 minutes. They are not only easy to use, but portable and convenient so that you can make the most of them whenever the mood takes you. In addition to this, most apps have an integrated reminder schedule which means that you’ll never forget a workout–kind of like having a mini personal trainer in your pocket spurring you on!

By the way, do you want to learn more about Computers and Technology? If so, I suggest you check Computer Repairs and Computer Support.

Five Great Free iPhone Apps for the Architect

By Mac Jones

The advent of smartphones and the iPhone in particular has made the life of the professional on the move much easier. Thanks to the introduction of Apps, we now have maps, route directions and a local directory right at our fingertips. But it’s not just these general Apps that are useful as there are now a growing number of specialist applications tailored to a particular trade or field of expertise.

Architecture reflects a profession where the office is often taken out onto the road. Whether visiting projects or meeting clients, today’s Architect now has the ability to take an important and useful selection of tools out with them.

We take a look at the best free iPhone Apps currently available.

Drawvis by DOT Systems

Drawvis allows architects or anyone involved with technical drawings produced with AutoCAD to view the DXF format files on the move. This is not just a passive viewer though, as the software allows you to attach sticky-style notes to the drawings to act as either a reminder for when you get back to the office or as a comment for another observer. The current revision (version 1.3) allows voice, image or video notes as well text. This App is also compatible with the iPod Touch and iPad tablet computer.

Design Observer by Observer Omnimedia LLC

From the same people that bring you the Design Observer website, designobserver.com, this App allows you to take their architecture-centred website on the move. It allows you to view a mobile device optimised version of the main site, thus making it very readable without any of the compromises that hinder you when trying to view full main site on a mobile device. Page widths are rendered correctly whilst pictures always appear the correct size.

Buildings by Despark Ltd

This piece of software acts as a reference guide in your pocket. Particularly useful for students and those with a passing interest in architecture, the map-based application features pretty much all of the iconic and important buildings from all across the world. Buildings can easily be found by either name or location, whilst each entry contains a wealth of information about each structure such as designer, date built and size. As well as a reference tool, it is great for just a bit of casual browsing to enhance your knowledge.

Globe Convert by Ivan Karpan

The quick and accurate conversion of units (from metric to imperial for example) is an essential element of a designers work. This one will always be with you and is just as useful in the office as it is on the move. In keeping with the design orientated theme of the profession, this App is possibly one of the best looking we have seen to date. With hundreds of conversion possibilities, this App covers them all. Available units include area, speed, distance, width, power, pressure and temperature. Globe Convert is pretty much an essential tool and useful for anyone, not just professional designers.

ColorSnap by Sherwin-Williams

Colorsnap is something very useful for those with a keen eye on the surrounding landscape. This application allows the user to capture the colour of something either from a photo or from a physical form in front of them and then convert this information into an actual paint colour. Different colours can be added to create your own unique colour palette, perhaps assigned to a specific project for instance. A great tool that can turn something that catches your eye in the street into something that makes it onto your next project.

As we can see, the Architect doesn’t have to be in the office in order to create drawings, calculate measurements or check specifications. The iPhone is a superb multitasking device, and with these free iPhone Apps you will be able do your job more quickly and much more accurately.

Top iPhone Apps for Nurses and Paramedics!

By Tony Robbinson

If you are a nurse or paramedic and also own an iPhone, there are plenty of apps out there that could make your life a lot easier.. There are quite a few apps out there that are specifically directed to you and your profession. There is a wide variety and some of them even allow you to keep up to date not only with your medical team but with your patients needs as well. Understand though, that a lot of the top apps listed here are not free so you will have to pay for them. But if you find any that apply to you and what you do, you will discover that they are well worth the money that you have to pay.

One of the best apps out there is the A.D.A.M. Symptom Navigator. A lot of patients with iPhones already have this so, if they have it, stands to reason a nurse should too. It’s an app that makes it extremely easy for you to find out the symptoms of a variety of different diseases and disorders. It also contains a lot of self care help in it as well.

Bio Dictionary is an app that covers most of the biological terms that you need in your every day work. There are a couple of ways that you can search for the terms and there are also explanations of each of the terms. The explanations are audible so you don’t even have to worry about reading them, just look up the term and let the app do the rest.

Epocrates RX is a great program that just happens to be free. This app includes a drug guide, information of formulas as well as different drug interactions. It also has a continual update feature that is also free and it comes not only with drug updates but medical news and updates as well. You also don’t need to have a wireless connection at the time you are using it since most of the information is stored right on your phone.

The iChart is an app that allows you to keep track of your patients and all of their personal medical information. This becomes your own medical assistant for your patients. It will store all of your patient info from their charts and will keep all of their medications and other important notes well organized so it is easy to access.

Lab Test is a lab test database and is broken down into categories such as:

  • Blood bank
  • Clinical Chemistry,
  • Coagulation
  • Hematology
  • Serology
  • Immunology
  • Tumor Markers
  • Urinalysis
  • Therapeutic Drugs

It will give you information on the different ranges for these tests as well as the importance of the tests given.

Medical Reference is a nice handy medical terminology app that makes it easy for you to find different terms without having to look through a huge medical terminology book.

Nursing Central is an app created by nurses and it is the complete deal for mobile phones. This app includes disease, test and drug information that is needed and used by all nurses.

One final hot app for nurses is called Skyscape Medical Resources. This is a great app that has Outlines in Clinical Medicine, Archimeds and a Medical Calculator, a Drug Dosing Tool and a MedAlert which comes free with your paid download. This is basically an overall app that covers things that a nurse deals with on a daily basis, especially if they work in a hospital.

How To Pick And Choose The Best Free Apps For Your iPhone

By Sebastien Dube

A Few Basic Guidelines

iPhones apps can greatly enhance the features and capabilities of your already feature-rich mobile device. The fact that most of the best apps for the iPhone are available for free makes it even more compelling to download and use them. But before you rush off to download the latest available app, you might need to find out how to pick and choose the best free apps for your iPhone, so that you can derive maximum benefit from them.

You can follow this list of criteria to help you pick and choose the best free apps for your iPhone:

Requirement

Most people are attracted to iPhone apps based on the wow factor. They hear about a new app or see a friend using one, and they immediately get all excited about it, without ever wondering whether they really need the app. Just because it is free does not mean that you should immediately download and use it. In fact, most people never use a large percentage of the apps that are installed on their iPhones. Understand that you would only use an app which really meets a particular need. So use that as your basic selection criterion to see whether or not you really need a particular app, before you download and use it.

Usability

Judge an app based on its usability. Unlike computer software applications, most apps are used on the go while driving, walking or even running. See how well you can use the app in those circumstances. Sometimes, you might have to wait for the app to evolve to a higher version before it becomes really usable. So unless the app is easy to use on the iPhone, do not go for it.

Value

Unless you have countless hours of free time, you can do without a large percentage of apps. In fact, most apps for entertainment can be very addictive and rob you off your precious time, which you can use productively in other tasks. So judge an app by the value it provides in your life. If it can aid you in productivity and save time, go for it. But if it wastes your time and decreases your income or profits, keep away from it.

Safety

When you have children at home, you should be wary of the kind of apps that you install on your smart phone, especially when you allow your children to use your iPhone. Apps that use geolocation can pinpoint the location of the iPhone user. If your children use such apps without your assistance, they can expose their location to complete strangers, which could be dangerous at times. Therefore, you need to be aware of these aspects when you install certain apps on your iPhone.

Feedback

It is impossible for you to find all the apps on your own. You might have to go by other people’s opinions, which is not really a bad thing. People are doing you a favor by downloading, installing and testing an app, so that you do not have to do it yourself. Therefore, check online for feedback from iPhone app users through forums and social media sites. There are thousands of sites online where iPhone app users share their experience and provide feedback on various different apps. Use this collective knowledge to help you pick and choose the best free apps for your iPhone.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 – Still the Top Selling Smartphone in the Market

By Sethe Gomez

When it comes to sales, iPhones have always reigned supreme. Year after year, every version has outsold every individual handset the competition has to offer. One of the reasons iOS smartphones are doing so well is due to the unwavering loyalty of Apple fans. They are more inclined to upgrade their device’s successor once it comes out. The same was expected with the iPhone 4S. However, this was not the case this November of 2011. There is a new handset that has broken the trend. This is the Samsung Galaxy S2.

This is an extraordinary feat for the Korean tech giant. The Cupertino firm is known for spending billions on advertising and marketing for their products. This is one of the reasons why the company is the best performing company the world has ever seen. Samsung managed to remain on top since the S2′s launch eight months ago. It managed to do this without spending as much on advertising and marketing. If fact, it only spent a fraction compared to Apple’s marketing expenses. Never has a mobile phone been this poplar against Apple’s handset.

This news comes to us via uSwitch. This website tracks a handset’s performance in the UK according to sales performance and searches on the internet. According to the data they gathered, the Korean smartphone has dominated the market for eight consecutive months. This currently makes the Samsung Galaxy S2 the most desired smartphone in the British market.

The website’s technology expert is Ernest Doku. He said, “The iPhone 4S has generated a huge level of interest from consumers, with retailers really finding it tough to cope with the high demand, even a month post-launch. This situation has certainly been compounded by the iPhone 4S’s surprising level of affordability.

“However, this should not take anything away from Samsung’s achievement with the ever popular Galaxy S2. It is undoubtedly the phone of the year, critically acclaimed and capturing the interest of smartphone addicts across the country for the last eight months.”

This is a clear indication that the trend is now changing. Of course, there is no way for the S2 to maintain its popularity forever. There will come a point when it relinquishes its reign to another handset. It may be an iPhone or it could be something else. However, maintaining the title as the top selling smartphone in the market for 8 months is no easy feat. It did this by offering the consumer a larger 4 inch display, a more powerful 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, and a slim 8.5 mm profile. These are the reasons why the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still the top selling smartphone in the market.

The iPhone 4 Compared To The Samsung Galaxy R – Which Comes Out On Top?

By Chris Westley

The Samsung Galaxy R is one of the newer handsets in Samsung’s popular Galaxy smartphone range. It offers a number of impressive features, and the handset is stylish. In this article I will put it against the iconic iPhone 4 by Apple, to see which comes out on top.

Aesthetically, a lot is similar between the Samsung galaxy R and the iPhone 4. They both have a black colour scheme with rounded corners and slim profile, with the major difference being in size, with the Samsung handset being a few millimetres wider to accommodate the larger screen.

Screen

The SC-LCD capacitive touchscreen of the Samsung Galaxy R measures up at 4.2 inches, so it is relatively larger than the 3.5 inch LED-backlit TFT capacitive touchscreen of the iPhone 4. What the latter lacks in size it certainly makes up for with its resolution. At 640x 960, it offers a resolution beaten only by the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note. The Samsung Galaxy R has a screen resolution of 480x 800 which seems to be the industry standard at the moment. In terms of the screen, the iPhone 4 wins, but if you want a larger screen, you may prefer the Galaxy R.

Storage

The iPhone 4, as with previous iPhone versions is available in 8, 16 and 32 GB models. The Samsung Galaxy R only has 8 GB of internal storage, but it also comes with a built in microSD slot. This can comfortably house a memory card of up to 32 GB, increasing the available storage substantially. In terms of the storage, it would be cost effective to choose the Samsung handset and simply utilise the micro SD slot, however this issue is unlikely to concern the majority of potential consumers.

Camera

The camera is one of the most important aspects of a smartphone for many, when choosing their latest handset. Both the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy R have decent cameras which are evenly matched for the most part. Both operate at 5 megapixels (2592x 1944 resolution), and offer autofocus, LED flash and 720p video calling. There is not really much to separate the two as camera phones, as each one has the tools to produce good results whilst remaining easy to use.

Operating System

Arguably the biggest difference between the two is the operating system. The iPhone 4 obviously runs the iOS platform which is exclusive to Apple devices, and has the familiar icon layout along with other perks like the AppStore, iTunes and iPod functionality. The Samsung Galaxy R has the increasingly popular Android (v2.3) OS as its platform of choice. This comes with Android Market for downloadable apps, and is highly customisable. Android handsets are becoming increasingly popular, and many are choosing to convert to this platform from iOS devices. The operating system is the biggest difference in my opinion, and ultimately it will be the factor that makes many decide between these two handsets. The Samsung Galaxy R also sports a dual-core processor (1GHz), so there is more computing power at the user’s disposal compared to the iPhone 4 (1GHz single core processor).

As mentioned above, choosing between these two handsets is difficult. It is not really fair to say that one is better than the other, as in my opinion I see these as two versions of the same phone; with the operating system being the biggest difference. Aside from the OS, there is not much to choose between the two in terms of hardware.

The Samsung Galaxy Y – An Affordable Touch Screen Handset Built for the Youth

By Sethe Gomez

Are you one of today’s youth who is in search of an affordable Android mobile handheld device that offers a purely touch screen interface? Are you a parent looking for an entry-level smartphone that caters to a younger audience? If this is the case, then Samsung’s S2 is clearly out of the question. Sure, it sports a purely touch UI. It comes with all the cutting-edge features Google’s mobile operating system has to offer. Lastly, it comes fully packed with the most powerful hardware mobile phone technology has to offer. However, all of these come at a price. It does come with a pretty hefty price tag. This means that it might not be ideal for younger people. If you are looking for something farther down the line, the Korean tech giant has what you are looking for. This is the Samsung Galaxy Y.

It sports a 3 inch TFT capacitive touch screen that comes with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. This will allow you to enjoy more from the web pages, videos, photos, and games. It will allow them to install apps that give them quick access to popular social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook. It will also allow them to read eBooks. SMS and chat will always be a part of the youth’s lifestyle. It is the preferred method of communication among younger individuals. For these preferences in communication, there are two reasons why the Samsung Galaxy Y is more ideal. First of all, Gingerbread offers an enhanced virtual keyboard. This will make it easier for people to type in their text messages and send them out in the least amount of time. Secondly, Samsung’s ChatOn mobile instant messaging service is on the horizon. This means that you can chat for free via the phone’s 3G internet capabilities.
