The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is one of the latest in the ever expanding range of Galaxy smartphones from Samsung. This range has produced notable handsets including the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus among others. In this article I will focus on the latter, and provide a review of the handset so you can decide if it is the right smartphone for you.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a stylish smartphone, which looks similar in shape to handsets such as the HTC Sensation, and to some extent, the iPhone 4S. Its spec list reveals the levels of technology incorporated within the handset, and it quickly becomes apparent that no corners have been cut during the phone’s design.

In my opinion, the screen is the most impressive feature of this phone. Measuring up at 4.65 inches, the Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen has a whopping pixel resolution of 720x 1280. Beaten only by the Samsung Galaxy Note, this is the highest resolution screen available on a smartphone. To put this into perspective, the iPhone 4S (the previous title holder) with its retina display has a resolution of 640x 960. Having a high screen resolution lends itself to multimedia use such as watching movies, viewing your photos, as well as gaming and web browsing, all benefiting from the levels of clarity and detail a high resolution screen brings.

Web browsing is another strength of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The pixel count is not the be all and end all when it comes to measuring the performance of camera, and the Galaxy Nexus proves this.

It is hard to find anything bad to say about this phone. Nearly every area of its spec list incorporates the latest and greatest technology available. When pitted against competing handsets from the likes of Apple and HTC, both of which offer handsets which are flooding the market at the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes out on top in several areas.

The Samsung Galaxy R – How Does It Differ From The Galaxy S2?

The Samsung Galaxy R offers a similar experience to the popular Galaxy S2, but at a more mid-range standpoint in the market. With its similar styling and impressive touchscreen, much about the two appears the same on the surface.

In this article I will take a closer look at its key features, and decide whether it makes for a viable alternative to the Galaxy S2.

The Galaxy S2 is known for its impressive touchscreen, and the Samsung Galaxy R follows in its footsteps. Although it has a lower resolution (480x 800), the SC-LCD capacitive touchscreen does a great job of image display, and also offers a highly responsive means of navigating the TouchWiz UI.

Storage wise, the Samsung Galaxy R is up to the task with 8 GB of on board storage, along with the added bonus of a micro SD slot. This can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB, so whatever you like to use your phone for, you should be covered in this department.

Internet browsing is another strength of this device. Utilising both HSDPA and Wi-Fi, users can connect whether they have wireless network connection or 3G coverage. The full HTML browser supports flash, allowing users to take advantage of embedded flash content in websites such as games, videos and graphics.

As a camera phone, the Samsung Galaxy R is a capable device. With a 5 megapixel unit (2592x 1944 pixel resolution), which may be a bit behind the seemingly standard 8 megapixels found on most new smartphones (including the Galaxy S2) but it is able to take good quality photos. Also, it can shoot HD video footage in 720p quality. Again, most new smartphones allow 1080p video capture, but unless you are a technology enthusiast, you are sure to be pleased with the results. The camera comes with an LED flash, autofocus, smile detection and video calling (via a front facing camera), so there are plenty of options to play around with, most of which can be set to automatic so it is easy to take great looking pictures.

The Android OS makes an appearance here, as it does on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note, in its latest incarnation, known as Gingerbread (version 2.3). Alongside its dual-core 1 GHz processor, there are plenty of customisable features, with the power under the hood to run demanding applications and multitask efficiently.

Being an Android handset, there are countless applications and features included as standard, and of course users can download additional apps from the Android Market, much like the famous Apple AppStore.

So back to the original question, is this a viable alternative to the Galaxy S2? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding “Yes”. The Galaxy S2 is more advanced and powerful in many respects, so if you are a smartphone enthusiast, this might be the better choice, but for everyone else, put it this way; if the Samsung Galaxy R was available just a year ago it would have been the most advanced smartphone available at the time. It offers everything you could possibly want in a smartphone, with the added bonus of making a saving over the alternative higher-end devices.

The iPhone 4S Versus The BlackBerry 9900 – Which Is Better?

The market has been engrossed with the release of BlackBerry phones, but with the recent launch of the Apple iPhone 4s, which of the two smartphones will the market prefer? Stating the features of each smart phone will determine which will appeal most to the crowd.

The BlackBerry 9900 already has an advantage over iPhone 4s because of its QWERTY keypad. Though equipped with this keypad, the BlackBerry 9900 also included a touch screen feature in their 2.8-inch screen that displays multimedia graphics in a 640×480 frame. This feature may be a turn-off to the crowd because of the small screen and low graphic pixel now that iPhone 4s has the Retina Display which offers its users a full HD view of the graphics in 960×480 pixels.

The iPhone’s processor is in theory more superior than that of the BlackBerry but even with a dual-core A5 chip, 1GHz processor, and 512MB RAM, the BlackBerry still runs faster. Though the latter doesn’t have a dual-core A5 chip, it runs faster because of its 1.2GHz processor and 768MB RAM. It has not yet been tested which of the two performs better because of its leveling race to being the best. In terms of memory storage, the iPhone 4s offers three varieties: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The BlackBerry, on the other hand, can handle 8GB worth of media files in its internal memory but can still be enhanced when slotted with a 32GB microSD card.

When it comes to the number of networks supported, the iPhone has the advantage because it handles both CDMA and GSM support. The BlackBerry 9900 is only an improved version of BlackBerry Bold which only supports GSM networks but the BlackBerry 9930 is the one which handles CDMA networks out of the three BlackBerry smartphones. However, both the iPhone 4s and BlackBerry 9900 possess an HSPA receiver that lets its users utilize a 14.4MBPS downlink. Both also have the Bluetooth function but when it comes to Wi-Fi connectivity, it is only attainable through the iPhone. The iPhone’s version of Bluetooth is a specialized type v4.0 receiver while the BlackBerry 9900 has the common v2.1.

The latest version of the iPhone boasts an iOS 5 (operating system) update and it can handle more applications like Twitter integration, iMessages, iReminder, Notification Center, and photo-editing applications. In fact, both the BlackBerry 9900 and iPhone 4s can have the iOS 5 update. However, the advantage of iPhone 4s over BlackBerry 9900 when it comes to hardware is its Siri, the voice recognition personal assistant.

What the BlackBerry 9900 can boast is its BlackBerry Operating System 7 which enables the phone to have a touchscreen feature, the BlackBerry browser, the BlackBerry Messenger 6, Liquid Graphics, and applications support for the BlackBerry App World storefront. If you want more secure Internet browsing, using the BlackBerry is more advisable because of its BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

The iPhone 4s’s price has been revealed recently as $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. With the BlackBerry 9900 price at $349.99, there is a price difference between the two mobile phone products of at least 16%.

Since the two models have been released the most popular have been the iPhone 4S White and the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

We Explore The Interface On The New Blackberry Curve 9380

RIM have moved away from the traditional keypad design, on their new Blackberry Curve 9380 and opted for a good quality touchscreen display in its place. This new addition together with the attractive price of the model should ensure that this device will appeal to a younger generation of users who require the excellent messaging and email facilities but with a larger screen for all of their social networking needs.

The Blackberry Curve 9380 incorporates version 7 of the Blackberry operating system and this new software has some positive effects on the interface that the model uses. The UI is more colourful than ever and the functionality has also improved which means that the device is much easier to operate than many earlier models in the range. The main homescreen on the model boasts several individual areas that can all be interacted with. At the top of the screen there is a Status bar which when tapped reveals several settings on the phone that can be adjusted. Below this you will find the Notifications which shows all incoming alerts from various applications that you have installed on the phone. These alerts range from Facebook notifications to reminders of events that you have scheduled in your diary. Located either side of the notifications there is are two icons in the form of a loudspeaker symbol and a magnifying glass. A simple tap on the speaker allows you to quickly switch profiles which is perfect if you want no audible alerts because you are in a meeting or at the cinema. The magnifying glass presents you with a search bar where you can type the name of any item and the phone will search for this for you. All areas of the handset are searched meaning a contact can be found just as easily as an obscure audio track that you have stored.

Unlike the iPhone 4S where all applications are shown on your main screen on the Blackberry Curve 9380 they are neatly hidden away at the bottom of the screen in the App Tray. An upwards swipe on the screen reveals a neat grid that contains the icons for all of the applications that you have installed. Once this grid is revealed you can also swipe sideways to reveal different arrangements and other applications that could not be displayed on the first page. The whole user interface present on this model is like a cross between Android systems and the iOS platform used on the iPhone. It boasts much of the user friendliness that is associated with Apple models but with many of the customisation options that Android users love.

The Blackberry Curve 9380 is an impressive addition to the range and should prove a big success with consumers. The user interface shows some big improvements over previous versions and the new large display is perfect for displaying it to its full potential.
